Feel the BURN

Yeah, I chopped a jalepeno pepper tonight to make pico de gallo, and I rubbed my hand on my face. This happened about 2 hours ago. My face still burns. Little tip to everyone -
DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!
Update 6/14/06 - Wiped my eye this morning and guess what? Yep, it burned! I have washed a couple of times with soap, so I do not know why I still have capcasin on my hands - anyone have any tips to clean it off?

OH TAMMY. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO HALP YOU RIGHT NOW, BUT IN THE FUTURE PLEASE USE ONE OF THOSE LITTLE CHOPPERS THAT YOU SEE ON TV. I BOUGHT ONE WHEN I LIVED IN LA. WORKS GREAT START CHOPPING THE JAPALENO THEN ADD THE CILANTRO ADD THE ONION AND TOMATOES, ETC. ALL IN THE ONE CONTAINER. oooooooooooH WE ARE HAVING AN EARRTHQUAKE RIGHT NOW. WEARE REALLY ROCKING.

Hey Tammy, rinse your hand with milk that's what your supposed to drink when you eat something too hot so maybe that'll work. Also vinegar may help we've used it when working with other allergy type causes like insulation. Also when chopping peppers put a little olive oil or veg. oil on your fingers and that helps the hot from sticking. And... the seeds are the hottest part so if you slice the pepper down one side and slide your knife under the seeds and just push them aside you can safely chop the pepper then add the seeds without touching them so your dish is as hot as you want it, less seeds less heat. This should work with any kind of hot peppers. You might want to wipe the area of your eye that you touched with milk also just in case some of the oil was still there.

Try aloe or lemon juice on your hands. I use plastic bags over my hands when I cut jalepenos or any hot peppers. I learned my lesson when I was a nanny in North Platte. My boss grew little hot red peppers in his garden, and I cut them without thinking. My fingers hurt for days.
